3 TOP Reasons to Invest in Custom Window Treatments

3 TOP Reasons to Invest in Custom Window Treatments

I’ve been making custom window treatments for 23 years and have become obsessed with them. I study them in all the shelter magazines and I’m always finding new ways to make them. Recently at a new clients’ home I was reminded that they too appreciated custom window coverings and she saw the importance of them. As I left the appointment I looked across her street to notice a house for sale and noticed they had some interesting windows. When I got home I looked up the listing for the home and was absolutely horrified to what I saw….Mind you this is a $550,000 home!Big HouseBeautiful Home!Bad Window TreatmentsLook at the red curtains hanging in the upper windows! Really?! Must be for light control???

The curtains are unlined, don’t really match the bedding that well, and they don’t even go to the floor!

So, what exactly is wrong with this picture? This is a beautiful, custom home with all the bells and whistles. Great neighborhood, land, 3500 square feet, cherry cabinets, granite countertops…..and, ready made drapes that don’t fit the windows…..this makes me very sad. Its like drinking a warm glass of milk in a Martini glass. Understand?!

So what is it about custom window treatments that makes them soooo great you ask? Not only are they made to fit your home and the actual window it will be hanging at, but they will last you a lot longer than something off the rack. Actually, I can even go as far as saying that they save you money. They will protect your furniture from sun-rot, last longer than unlined curtains that you replace every couple years, and yes, they add value to your home. So why are custom window treatments preferred? Read on!

1.  I’ll start with the size. It fits the window. Perfectly. Measurements are taken of the actual window and the treatments are made to fit that exact size. Did you know that you can have the “same size” window in a room but it will not be all the same measurements. I have measured windows that have varied up to 1.5″ different per window and they all “looked” the same. The building process can make slight variations that change the window sizes ever so slightly.Measuring tape on a window

2. Fabrics are chosen to exactly match the paint, the bedding, the furniture, not just close to what is needed, it is exactly what is needed. The fabric scale is also important to the overall design. Fabrics for drapery and upholstery that you purchase through an Interior Designer or a Showroom are much better quality than you would get in a do-it-yourself store. If you see a whole bolt of fabric on a sale rack beware….it might have a skewed pattern, there may be a flaw in the middle of the bolt that you cannot see, or it might be a second quality good. That is a nightmare to sew with. Especially if you are having something made that the pattern needs to match.

3.  Design….the design of custom window treatments can accent a theme or rhythm in a room, it can made a ceiling look taller, and it can make a window look wider. The overall design of a custom window treatment can be the focal point in the room. The design of custom window treatment can help control the privacy you have from inside as well as control light in the way you need it to be controlled. The actual look of the window treatment can also add value to the home. Do you know how many times I’ve been told that when selling their home, the window treatments were written in the contract to stay with the home?!

A little story for you. I had a client who lived in a home and she wanted to sell it. Before they bought the home, it had sat on the market 1-1/2 years. They bought it and hired me to come in and pick paint colors and do window treatments. A year or so later, they decided to sell the home. They called a realtor and the home sold in 3 days because it “looked” so nice!
